John & Susie Dunn, 36 and 35 – “Susie and I have been married 14 years and together we try to be active and fit. Before CrossFit, we were members of a traditional gym and showed up 3-5 days a week like many people do. It was our routine. Susie had a personal trainer, too. Some of our friends were doing CrossFit but we were not convinced it was something we could do. The workouts, weights and movements were something we weren’t used to. It all seemed hard. But one CrossFitting friend encouraged us to give CrossFit a try and made us feel like it was something we could really do. We started CrossFit Hydro in August 2013 and Susie and I feel like we owe our friend big time!”

Susie’s story: “When I first started at CrossFit Hydro, I was terrified! I’d been a loyal gym go-er for many years and felt comfortable with my elliptical and weights routine. I knew CrossFit would put me out of my comfort zone and I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to keep up during the workouts or do all the movements. However, after attending the first on-ramp class and learning a few basics, I was hooked! I was also relieved to find out that everyone in my on-ramp class was feeling the same way I was about CrossFit—and that made a difference. I wasn’t alone!”

“I am someone who likes to learn knew skills so I LOVED learning the CrossFit movements. Doing CrossFit brings out the athlete that I always knew was inside me. It feels amazing to be able to express that everyday I come into Hydro for a workout. My confidence has skyrocketed because I know I can get through a physically and mentally challenging CrossFit workout. Because of CrossFit, I feel like I can handle most things that life throws at me.”

“To anyone looking to start CrossFit, do it! CrossFit will change every aspect of your life in immeasurable ways. You’ll be better at work, at home and in life! If you don’t like the path you’re going down, then CrossFit is for you. It’s the most “un-fun” FUN you will have. Is it difficult? Yes. Is it worth it? Yes! Is it fun? ABSOLUTELY. I look forward to the workout every day (even if I know it will be especially challenging for me) because I know it will be the best part of my day.”

“I can’t say enough about the coaching at CrossFit Hydro. I’ve always felt they can see the athlete in me and they treat me like one. They believe in me and that makes me push myself harder to continuously improve and work toward my goals.”

John’s story: “For me, the on-ramp classes went okay—there was a lot to learn and I struggled with completing the warm up exercises and stretches because I am not a flexible person. I knew immediately that CrossFit could improve that. Once on-ramp was over, we moved into the regular classes and I would be lying if I didn’t say that I was freaked out about it. There were a lot of strong and well-conditioned members already at Hydro and I was going to have to workout alongside them. It was hard! But, Susie’s encouragement and the welcoming community at CrossFit Hydro kept me going.”

“CrossFit has changed my life in so many ways. At 36 years of age, I am in the best shape of my life and I am amazed at my strength and flexibility gains. Prior to CrossFit, I was sort of “skinny fat” and had very little muscle tone and strength. I didn’t play a lot of sports growing up so the idea of being called an “athlete” was kind of new to me. Outside of the gym, doing a task like yard work is much easier, and the mental discipline I now have helps me in my sales career.”

“Participating in CrossFit with Susie has been one of the best things we have done in a long time to strengthen our marriage. We both get to do our best in workouts as individuals and be independent, yet we spend time doing it together. The importance of the Hydro community is one aspect I didn’t understand before I started CrossFit. The encouragement and support we all give each other makes us all feel like we are part of a team.”

“To anyone trying to decide if CrossFit Hydro is right for them, you have to just sign up and do it. Commit to a few months and attend class multiple times a week. Don’t be shy about talking to other people at the gym and just have fun. Like Susie, I can’t say enough about the coaching at Hydro. Their commitment and genuine interest in coaching and supporting each member is a big part of everyone’s success. To everyone out there, I would say just come and check out CrossFit Hydro and see how CrossFit can change you for the better!”
